Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board

Leadership Change
The economist stated he would retreat from public roles after House committee disclosed his frequent communications with Jeffrey Epstein

Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is departing from the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.

He remarked in a release that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have served, optimistic about the prospects of the company, and eagerly await following their development".

The former Harvard president, who previously led Harvard University, stated on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his connections with Epstein.

Digital Correspondence

The recently released communications demonstrated that the official communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before Epstein's 2019 detention for alleged human trafficking of minors.

In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company said it understood Summers' determination to step down.

"We value his numerous inputs and the perspective he brought to the governing body," the organization remarked.

Congressional Action

This news follows after both chambers of the legislative branch agreed on recently to pass a measure that would mandate the US justice department to disclose its records on Jeffrey Epstein.

The measure will then proceed to the office of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. The President has indicated he intends to approve the bill, after reversing his stance on the issue following pushback from his supporters.

Correspondence Findings

A collection of financier-linked correspondence disclosed by the Congressional committee recently referenced numerous high-profile figures in the Epstein's previous network, without suggesting any illegal behavior by those individuals.

The messages indicated that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein dined together frequently, with Epstein often seeking to introduce the official to notable international personalities.

Personal Accountability

After the emails were shared with the public, Summers expressed he accepted "full responsibility for my ill-advised decision to continue communicating with Mr Epstein".

He further stated that he hoped "to reestablish trust and mend relationships with the individuals nearest to me".

Career Background

Summers served in leadership roles under Democratic administrations; serving as economic leader under the former president, and as head of the White House economic team under President Obama.

He led Harvard from five years and remains a professor there. When announcing his withdrawal from public commitments previously on Monday, he indicated he would maintain his teaching commitments.

Additional Consequences

Following his statement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a liberal research organization in DC where Summers was a senior fellow, confirmed that Summers was not connected with the organization.

Summers became part of the leadership of the technology firm, which makes the AI chatbot, in last year - following a defeated move to remove its chief executive the company leader.
