I'm Known As the ‘Penis and Vagina’ Kid from Kindergarten Cop: A Candid Conversation.
Arnold Schwarzenegger is rightfully celebrated as an Hollywood heavyweight. But, in the midst of his cinematic dominance in the eighties and nineties, he also headlined several critically acclaimed comedies. The standout film is Kindergarten Cop, which marks its 35-year mark this holiday season.
The Film and An Iconic Moment
In the 1990 movie, Schwarzenegger portrays a undercover cop who goes undercover as a kindergarten teacher to catch a killer. Throughout the film's runtime, the procedural element functions as a basic structure for the star to share adorable moments with his young class. The most unforgettable features a child named Joseph, who unprompted stands up and declares the actor, “It's boys who have a penis, females have a vagina.” Schwarzenegger deadpans, “I appreciate the insight.”
The young actor was brought to life by youth performer Miko Hughes. His career featured a character arc on Full House as the bully to the famous sisters and the character of the child who returns in the 1989 adaptation of Stephen King’s Pet Sematary. He still works in film today, with a slate of movies on the horizon. Additionally, he is a regular on fan conventions. Recently discussed his experiences from the filming of the classic after all this time.
Behind the Scenes
Question: Starting off, how old were you when you filmed Kindergarten Cop?
Miko Hughes: I think I was four. I was the most junior of all the kids on set.
Wow, I don't recall being four. Do you retain any flashes from that time?
Yeah, somewhat. They're snapshots. They're like mental photographs.
Do you recall how you landed the job in Kindergarten Cop?
My family, especially my mother would accompany me to auditions. Frequently it was an open call. There'd be a room full of young actors and we'd all just have to wait, go into the room, be in there for a very short time, read a small part they wanted and that's all. My parents would coach me on the dialogue and then, once I learned to read, that was some of the first material I was reading.
Do you have any recollection of meeting Arnold? What was your impression of him?
He was incredibly nice. He was fun. He was nice, which I guess makes sense. It would be strange if he was a dick to all the kids in the classroom, that surely wouldn't foster a good work environment. He was fun to be around.
“It'd be weird if he was a dick to all the kids in the classroom.”
I knew he was a major movie star because I was told, but I had never really seen his movies. I sensed the excitement — he was a big deal — but he wasn't scary to me. He was simply playful and I only wanted to hang out with him when he wasn't busy. He was busy, obviously, but he'd sometimes engage here and there, and we would cling to his muscles. He'd show his strength and we'd be holding on. He was really, really generous. He gifted all the students in the classroom a yellow cassette player, which at the time was a major status symbol. This was the coolest device, that iconic bright yellow cassette player. I used to rock out to the Power Rangers soundtrack and the Ninja Turtles soundtrack for years on that thing on that thing. It wore out in time. I also was given a genuine metal whistle. He had the coach whistle, and the kids all received one too as well.
Do you remember your experience as being enjoyable?
You know, it's amusing, that movie became a phenomenon. It was a major production, and it was a wonderful time, and you would think, in retrospect, I would want my memories to be of the star himself, the direction of Ivan Reitman, visiting Astoria, the production design, but my memories are of being a really picky eater at lunch. Like, they got everyone pizza, but I wasn't a pizza fan. All I would eat was the toppings only. Then, the original Game Boy was brand new. That was the coolest toy, and I was proficient. I was the smallest kid and some of the bigger kids would hand me their devices to get past hard parts on games because I knew how, and I was quite pleased with myself. So, it's all youthful anecdotes.
That Famous Quote
OK, the penis and vagina line, do you remember how it happened? Did you know what you were saying?
At the time, I wasn't fully aware of what the word shocking meant, but I knew it was provocative and it caused the crew to chuckle. I was aware it was kind of something I wasn't supposed to do, but I was given approval in this case because it was humorous.
“It was a difficult decision for her.”
How it was conceived, based on what I was told, was they were still developing characters. A few scenes were established early on, but once they had the entire ensemble assembled, it was more of a collaboration, but they developed it during shooting and, presumably it's either the director or producers came to my mom and said, "We have an idea. We want Miko to have this line. Are you okay with this?" My mom didn't agree right away. She said, "I need to consider this, let me sleep on it" and took some time. She really wrestled with it. She said she was hesitant, but she believed it could end up as one of the unforgettable moments from the movie and her instinct was correct.
