A minimum of 64 civilians died in a law enforcement action against the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's records.

Four security agents lost their lives during the security mission in the Alemão and Penha districts, state officials reported. In excess of 80 suspects were arrested.

Some 2,500 law enforcement officers were involved in Tuesday's operation

Violent conflicts erupted when approximately 2,500 security personnel initiated the operation on Tuesday early hours. The criminal organization reacted using gunfire, setting fire to barriers and using drone-dropped explosives, authorities stated.

The UN Human Rights Office said it was "horrified" by the police operation, urging "prompt and effective investigations".

Operation Impact

The area of favelas close to the city's international airport is seen as the main base of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.

Government representatives said a minimum of 50 of the deceased were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Numerous individuals were hurt, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Resident Accounts

Residents have compared the mountainous region - housing around 300,000 individuals - to a "battlefield" since the operation began.

Roads remain closed throughout the region.

Criminal Expansion

The Red Command group has been increasing their control throughout the region, growing illegal substance trade paths and power in the informal settlements.

Local law enforcement said more than 200kg (441lb) of drugs were confiscated in the operation, along with dozens of firearms.

Operation Background

The combined action by civil and military police comes after a year-long investigation.

Numerous alleged criminals are believed to be members of a faction from the northern region who are at the moment taking refuge in the city.

Broader Context

Large-scale police operations are not uncommon in Brazil prior to important worldwide conferences in the South American nation.

The UN climate summit COP30 is set to occur in the northern urban center in November.
